Whenever we're asked "how do people use Google spreadsheets?", we always struggle with where to start. It's not that we can't think of examples, it's just that the examples are all so different, so unique. Sure, there are definitely favorite themes -- sports, finance and, yes, knitting -- but then the examples become so particular to the people and groups who are using them: The beer taster's results. The nursery school class schedule. The biker's riding log. The family reunion plan. The ski-trip sign-up form. Endless examples, all of which, to spreadsheet junkies like us, are interesting.

But while we've always wanted to give people more options to view and use their information in Google Docs, we knew that trying to build all of these one at a time would simply serve too few people, given all the different ways people use and share spreadsheets.

So today we're starting a new path to better enable developers to customize and build on top of Google Docs with two new tools we are releasing today: Gadgets-in-Docs and the Visualization API.

Instead of delivering just one or two new types of reports, or a new visual map mashup (can you ever get enough of those?), we decided to deliver a platform on which anyone, not just Google, could build the next best thing. We even invited a few developers to try this with us, and they join us in this launch by featuring just a few of their creations, like Panorama's pivot table, or Viewpath's Gantt Chart, or InfoSoft's Funnel Charts -- all great tools for the student and enterprise user alike. We also built a few early gadgets ourselves which you might find useful.

We borrowed the Gadgets-in-Docs concept from the iGoogle team, so it's only fitting that you can also publish your spreadsheet gadgets to iGoogle, where you can see your data-based-Gadget right next to all that other stuff that's important to you (even if it is just a picture of your dog).

To try it out, go into Google Docs and open up a spreadsheet. Click on the chart icon, and click 'Gadget...'. Pick your gadget, customize it to fit your data, and then publish it out to iGoogle or to any webpage.

If you're a developer and want to reach millions of people with your latest creation, check out the Google Visualization API, courtesy of our visualization team engineers. The Visualization API provides a platform that can be used to create, share and reuse visualizations written by the developer community. It provides a common way (an API) to access structured data sources, the first being Google spreadsheets.

Last Summer, upon the release of the brand-new, 6-series of SOTi Pocket Controller Pro and the free My Mobiler (click the links for a review!), I’ve already pointed out the “let’s control your Windows Mobile device from your desktop!” scene is really thriving.

Since the above reviews, here have been major upgrades. First, My Mobiler has been greatly enhanced (for example, TCP/IP connections have been added) and the bugs I’ve elaborated on in the review have all been fixed – while still maintaining its free status. In this article (and the accompanying chart), I also thoroughly elaborate on these changes.

Even more importantly, the, for long-time Windows Mobile users, known VirtualCE has been greatly upgraded and enhanced.

As VirtualCE has been written by the same developer as the well-known and very fast PQV and SmartGear – one of the best titles in their respective categories (picture viewers and pre-SNES home and handheld console emulators). I wasn’t disappointed: while there is indeed some missing functionality in the new version, its price, CPU usage and, at times, speed, speak for themselves. It’s evident it has been written by a Windows Mobile & C / assembly language guru that knows how to optimize code and, therefore, reduce the CPU (and memory) usage.

VirtualCE is, feature-wise, somewhere between the free My Mobiler and the pretty expensive, albeit VERY capable and highly recommended SOTi Pocket Controller. In some respects, it’s definitely more capable than SOTi’s app (for example, see the parallel multicontrol feature, which is only present in the even more expensive Enterprise version of SOTi’s app; also, the much lower CPU usage should be mentioned); in other respects, it’s inferior to even My Mobiler (see for example the complete lack of handheld / handset -> desktop PC clipboard synchronization).

The Google employees in Zürich, Switzerland, moved to a new building, and Flickr user Tiptoe between April 2007 and January 2008 shot what seem to be a couple of photos from within. These rooms have some familiar Google office design elements, though some of them look a bit more old-fashioned than the ones of other offices, while others look even more futuristic/ odd/ cultish than usual (I think some new age sect waiting for UFO landings would instantly feel at home).

If I read the pic right, both the bookshelf and the fireplace in this library room are fake.

HTML5 appeared as first working draft at the World Wide Web Consortium. Partially, XHTML2 made more sense to me (e.g. a simple instead of

and so on could be used for headings, accompanied by a
element... and RSS features were integrated right into the document). We’ll have to see where the W3C wants to go – and then wait some years for browsers to actually implement any of this... and then wait for those browsers to be reasonably deployed.

Right now, this Alpha specification seems to try to acknowledge some web realities (like an
element for typical blogs, called “Web logs” in the draft), while ignoring others (for instance, elements like
are still included even though they remain to be largely ignored by web authors even after years). It’s a bit of a manifesto – written in rather non-accessible language, in good W3C tradition – trying to merge different “HTML religions” (e.g. Plain Old HTML vs XHTML/ XML), so many aspects of it are merely of religious interest it seems. At one point, this aspect is even made explicit when the draft says (my emphasis):

<It is basically a talisman. It is allowed merely to make migration to and from XHTML mildly easier.>>

Interestingly enough, the “nofollow” attribute value for links – originally introduced by several search engines, including Google (nofollow was only used a document’s meta section before that) – has made it into the specification, along with a couple of other values. Perhaps not coincidentally, one of the two editors listed for the document is Ian Hickson, who works at Google. Quote from the draft:

“The nofollow keyword may be used with a and area elements. The nofollow keyword indicates that the link is not endorsed by the original author or publisher of the page.”

“The noreferrer keyword may be used with a and area elements. If a user agent follows a link defined by an a or area element that has the noreferrer keyword, the user agent must not include a Referer HTTP header (or equivalent for other protocols) in the request.”

“The search keyword may be used with link, a, and area elements. ... The search keyword indicates that the referenced document provides an interface specifically for searching the document and its related resources.”

“The help keyword may be used with link, a, and area elements. ... For a and area elements, the help keyword indicates that the referenced document provides further help information for the parent of the element defining the hyperlink, and its children.”

“The license keyword may be used with link, a, and area elements. For link elements, it creates a hyperlink. The license keyword indicates that the referenced document provides the copyright license terms under which the current document is provided.”

“The archives keyword indicates that the referenced document describes a collection of records, documents, or other materials of historical interest.”

“The feed keyword indicates that the referenced document is a syndication feed.”

There is no specific immediate need to do this, but if you are using Google Analytics for your traffic tracking, Google asks you to update the tracker script from this (replace YOURNUMBER with your ID, as contained in your old tracker code)...

The old code will still work though for at least another year, according to Google. Google says they “recommend you use for all new accounts and new profiles for new domains. ... This will allow you to take advantage of the most up-to-date tracking functionality as it is added to Google Analytics.” (A migration guide in PDF format explains more.)

As another change to Google Analytics – no matter which tracking code you are using – you can now graph two metrics against each other, say, visits vs page views. Click the arrow button to the top right of your main visits chart to set this up.
